Our Story
The Old Customs House at Varel Harbour
The Old Customs House is a listed building right at Varel Harbour. Built in the 19th century as a customs station for trade on the Jade Bay, it has been lovingly restored and today houses four unique holiday apartments as well as the Customs House Gallery.
History
Varel Harbour looks back on centuries of history as a trading port on the Jade Bay. The Customs House was the central point of contact for goods traffic and continues to shape the image of the historic harbour to this day. The solid construction with its original wooden beams, high ceilings and thick walls creates a special ambience.
Today
On the ground floor you will find the spacious ground floor apartment, above it the grand Beletage, and under the roof two exclusive loft apartments. The offering is complemented by two modern tiny houses right by the harbour basin.
Six accommodations — one special place
Four holiday apartments in the Old Customs House (Beletage, Loft, Loft 2, Ground Floor) and two tiny houses right by the harbour. Space for up to 29 guests in total.
Olaf and Alexandra Mergili have been running the holiday apartments for over five years. As Superhosts on Airbnb and with an average rating of 9.2/10 on Booking.com, hospitality and quality come first.
The building also houses the Customs House Gallery with jewellery exhibitions and goldsmith workshops.
